Cases reported in India

HMPV infections were recently diagnosed in India. The initial cases were reported from Bengaluru, Karnataka. Two infants tested positive there. One infant was 8 months old, who was admitted to Bengaluru Baptist Hospital on January 2, 2025, with complaints of fever and breathlessness and was detected to be suffering from HMPV. Another is a 3-month-old female infant diagnosed with the history of bronchopneumonia; the same HMPV is identified at Bengaluru Baptist Hospital and has since been discharged.

The state now witnesses its first case of HMPV in a 2-month-old from Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district. He was admitted on 24 December 2024, at the private hospital at Ahmedabad following respiratory infection, which later returned as HMPV on 26th. The baby is stabilizing now.

Till date, no case of HMPV has been reported in the state of Andhra Pradesh. State Public Health and Family Welfare Director K. Padmavathi stated that there is no need to panic. According to Business Standard, she further said that although HMPV was spreading just like COVID-19 that could target children, old-aged, and the one whose immunity level was already low, but there was no reported case of this in Andhra Pradesh

The Union health ministry is said to be keeping a close surveillance on the latest development through varied surveillance channels. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued a statement clarifying that despite the cases being registered, there’s no rise noted in ILI or SARI cases in India.

The health authorities are urging people to refrain from committing lapses of the prevention measures advocated during the COVID-19 period, after witnessing HMPV breakouts recently in other countries, such as China. For this, health care providers require a good maintenance of hand hygiene, mask wearing especially among old people and women during pregnancy periods, and minimizing the contact towards patients with the symptoms of the respiratory system. To date, no cause of concern is in existence, yet it is suggested to remain abreast of any such advisories in health concerns.
